In every walk of life there are people who want to excel, to be the best the brightest and push every aspect of what they do to the limits. These people are the diehards, the hard core, the guys who join the special forces, the people for whom being a ninja is a genuine ambition rather than an adolescent fantasy….these are the guys who should be joining the Denim Tux World Championship. The DTWC, as it is better known, is a 24 month contest to wear a tux (top and bottoms) made from either denim or duck, whichever bottoms you wear are also eligible to enter the DWC so you also double your chances of winning.
On a personal level I love the denim tux and I think it sounds great to spend 24 months not questioning what you’re going to wear every day, you just pick the same stuff you had on yesterday and keep on rocking it (with the exception of wash days), in that way the DTWC is perfect for lazy people equally as dedicated people. However, what you have to consider is the mental side of doing something like this, because when you open your wardrobe for the next 24 months you will be greeted by clothing that you can no longer wear, no flannel, no hickory, no sweaters, no hoodies…..just you and your denim (or duck) for 24 months. Mentally I think that is quite a challenge to commit yourself to especially if , as I do, you spend much time browsing denim forums looking at new and pretty things that will attract your attention and try to throw you off course. So what are the positives of doing something like this?
Well, as we’ve already said it is great for lazy people, but the major upside to wearing a denim tux with such commitment is that you get to experience denim evolution en masse, and for a sustained period. I often think that it would be interesting (though maybe a little insane) to buy a new pair of jeans, a denim work shirt, a leather jacket and some boots and then wear nothing else for 4 or 5 years and take a photograph every day, well the DTWC is exactly that on a smaller scale….unless you enter the boot contest too. I love the thought of looking back at a full 24 months of wear on the same outfit, seeing every last crease and fade develop day after day, I think that it would totally change the way that you think about clothes for the rest of your life.
The DTWC is for people who are more than a little obsessive, slightly crazy even, and have the patience and will power to stay a 24 month course. It really isn’t that long, just the length of you average iPhone contract these days, but so much more rewarding. It’s fair to say that this is the aspect of the contest which intrigues me the most, and the one which I really hope will prove to be popular, there is so much potential here for people to produce some absolutely stunning worn denim, and for denim fans all over the world to ( for the first time ever), see a full denim tuxedo age together and be recorded in images.
The DTWC is for the denim ninjas, I hope that there are quite a few out there who are willing to take up this challenge and share their fortitude with us . Embrace the tux and share the wear.
